Comparison of cerebral activation between motor execution and motor imagery of self-feeding activity

چکیده

Motor imagery is defined as an act wherein individual contemplates a mental action of motor execution without apparent action. Mental practice executed by repetitive can improve performance simultaneous sensory input or overt output. We aimed to investigate cerebral hemodynamics during and self-feeding activity using chopsticks. This study included 21 healthy right-handed volunteers. The task comprised either eating sliced cucumber pickles with chopsticks examine eight regions interest: pre-supplementary area, supplementary bilateral prefrontal cortex, premotor sensorimotor cortex. mean oxyhemoglobin levels were detected near-infrared spectroscopy reflect activation. significantly higher in the left cortex than area area. Moreover, imagery, compared execution. Supplementary had important roles activity. activation are likely affected intentional cognitive processes. Levels differed some areas was approved Ethical Review Committee Nagasaki University (approval No. 18110801) on December 10, 2018.

Fine modulation in network activation during motor execution and motor imagery.

Motor imagery, the 'mental rehearsal of motor acts without overt movements', involves either a visual representation (visual imagery, VI) or mental simulation of movement, associated with a kinesthetic feeling (kinetic imagery, KI). Previous brain imaging work suggests that patterns of brain activation differ when comparing execution (E) with either type of imagery but the functional connectivi...

The moving phantom: motor execution or motor imagery?

Amputees who have a phantom limb often report the ability to move this phantom voluntarily. In the literature, phantom limb movements are generally considered to reflect motor imagery rather than motor execution. The aim of this study was to investigate whether amputees distinguish between executing a movement of the phantom limb and imagining moving the missing limb. We examined the capacity o...

Disentangling motor execution from motor imagery with the phantom limb.

Amputees can move their phantom limb at will. These 'movements without movements' have generally been considered as motor imagery rather than motor execution, but amputees can in fact perform both executed and imagined movements with their phantom and they report distinct perceptions during each task. Behavioural evidence for this dual ability comes from the fact that executed movements are ass...

Comparison of Brain Activation during Motor Imagery and Motor Movement Using fNIRS

Motor-activity-related mental tasks are widely adopted for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) as they are a natural extension of movement intention, requiring no training to evoke brain activity. The ideal BCI aims to eliminate neuromuscular movement, making motor imagery tasks, or imagined actions with no muscle movement, good candidates. This study explores cortical activation differences betwe...
